Patient Participation Group

The Downend Health Group 'Willow Branch' formed a Patient Participation Group (PPG) in 2014. This is a group of patients who may not have any medical training but do have an interest in the services provided by us, their surgery. The aim of a PPG is to work in partnership with the GPs and practice management team to ensure that patient views are represented.

It is therefore hoped that our PPG will contribute to a continuous improvement of the services offered by the Willow Surgery as well as provide practical support when necessary. Examples of how other PPGs have helped surgeries include:

  • Help with, and discuss the results of, patient surveys
  • Aid communication with patients
  • Provide services in the surgery eg health promotion information
  • Encourage patients to engage more actively in their own healthcare
  • Contribute to service development and decision making
  • Improve practice equipment and facilities

Aims and Objectives

Each meeting lasts for approximately one hour. The agreed aims and objectives for the group are:

  • Improvements for patients and staff
  • Health Promotion
  • Improving Patient Education, Health and Services

One of the early things, for example, which the PPG has discussed has been how the practice can reduce the number of patients who fail to turn up to booked appointments (also known as "Did Not Attends" or DNAs) thereby, it is hoped, increasing the number of appointments available to other people to see their GP.

The PPG has also arranged to survey patients to see if there would be any interest in attending talks at the surgery about various health issues, for example family planning. If adopted, it may be that doctors or nurses with specialist knowledge from the practice could do the presentations.
